About Us

The Eureka Theater opened on March 4, 1939, as Humboldt County’s premier movie palace. Designed by architect William B. David in the Streamline Moderne style, the theater featured a spectacular neon marquee, elegant interiors, and seating for 1,700 patrons. For more than five decades, it was a centerpiece of entertainment in downtown Eureka. Facing competition from modern multiplexes, the theater ended regular film screenings in August 1996.

In 2000, following its purchase by Rob and Cherie Arkley, the building was donated to the newly established Eureka Concert and Film Center (ECFC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the historic theater and returning it to community use. Since then, volunteers, donors, and community partners have supported an ongoing restoration. Major accomplishments include improvements to the marquee, restoration of the historic lobby and decorative finishes, installation of new fire and security systems, and upgrades to heating, lighting, and sound. The theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Beginning in 2019, ECFC renewed its focus on financial sustainability, expanded programming, and increased community access. Today, the theater hosts movies, concerts, film premieres, festivals, school graduations, nonprofit fundraisers, and private events. In 2026, the theater has more than 100 days booked, reflecting its growing importance as a regional cultural and community gathering place.

Recent projects include major investments in sound and lighting technology, acquiring replacement auditorium seating, and launching the Raise the Roof campaign to replace the aging auditorium roof. ECFC is also preparing a larger capital campaign to restore the theater’s historic marquee, improve its interior, and modernize the facility while preserving its architectural character. These investments are intended to secure the Eureka Theater’s future as one of Humboldt County’s principal performing arts and community venues
