Horror Theater presents: CHRISTINE

Sponsored by Robo-Cat Productions

Hosted by The Great Razooly!

October 14, 2016

Doors 7:00 PM | Showtime 7:30 PM

The statistics of automobile fatalities involving driverless cars possessed by pure evil are woefully scarce. But anecdotal evidence in the form of Hollywood cinema is fortunately less so, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better example than John Carpenter's 1983 classic CHRISTINE, based on Stephen King's equally silly-but-surprisingly-effective novel of the same name. When nerdy teenager Arnie Cunningham lays his eyes on the dilapidated fixer-upper 1958 Plymouth Fury, it's love at first sight. As he lovingly--some might say obsessively--restores her, Arnie's personality gradually changes...and his high school tormenters start dying in grisly "accidents." Tickets are $5.00 all ages.

This bleak, beautiful, grisly, angry, tragic, and funny film is the story of a wrongly-prosecuted barber (Johnny Depp) who loses his wife and daughter to the evil Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). Years later, he returns to London to wreak his vengeance as Sweeney Todd, a barber who wields a wicked razor. But how to dispose of the bodies? Enter Mrs. Lovett, who owns the pie shop on the floor below. Together, they find love, success, and more than a pinch of madness. Tickets are $5.00 all ages.

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH

Sponsored by Sanford's Salon

September 30, 2016

Doors 7:00 PM | Showtime 7:30 PM

Definitely the best transsexual, post-punk, neo-glam rock opera you're likely to see this season. Hedwig, born a boy in East Berlin, falls in love with an American G.I. and undergoes a sex-change operation in order to marry him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, the procedure does not go as planned. Years later, the "internationally ignored" Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the United States, telling her life story through a series of concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants. Her tour dates just happen to coincide with those of arena rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed, angel-faced general's son who once loved Hedwig...but then stole all of her songs. Tickets are $5.00 all ages.

Steve McQueen in

BULLITT

September 9, 2016

Doors 7:00 PM | Showtime 7:30 PM

Steve McQueen puts a 1968 Ford Mustang GT to good use over and over again in this '60s classic. The plot revolves around McQueen, starring as no-nonsense San Francisco cop Frank Bullitt, and his efforts to take down the crime kingpin who killed an important witness that Bullitt was assigned to keep safe. While the spine of the plot is generic, McQueen and his damn beautiful vehicle turn what would be a by-the-numbers cop action flick into something special. Expert direction by Peter Yates, who makes multiple car chases seem anything but redundant, allows the film to gain energy until the film's ultimate climax. Filled with an overabundance of "cool" on so many levels it's no secret as to why BULLITT remains one of the canonical car movies of all-time!

Johnny Boyd
Cocktails with the Crooner

August 28, 2016
Doors/Cocktails 5PM | Show 6:15PM

The Eureka Theater and Redwood Coast Music Festivals are proud to present Johnny Boyd: Cocktails with the Crooner, an elegant evening of cocktails and dancing with singer/song-writer and former frontman for Indigo Swing--Mr. Johnny Boyd! No one exemplifies modern-day crooning better than Johnny Boyd: smooth, romantic vocals; matinee idol charisma; classic gentleman’s style; and dynamic, irreverent performances. But it’s his fresh, emotive, all-original contributions to the Great American Songbook that will be his legacy. Boyd, a prolific songwriter, is renowed for his unique ability to seamlessly blend jazz, swing, pop, country, gospel and rock, bringing back the nostalgic charisma of a bygone era. NPR aptly stated, “If Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash had a love child, it would be Johnny Boyd.” With his highly anticipated release, Someday Dreams Of You (Cliffdive Records, release date 02/12/2016), Boyd introduces a whole new generation of listeners to the Great American Songbook and his classic crooning style. The new album contains both overlooked treasures and brand new classics penned by Boyd himself in the Great American Songbook style.

Classic cocktail hour/doors at 5pm. Show begins at 6:15. $15 general admission/$20 Premier (includes exclusive meet-and-greet in our Upper Lobby with a special Champagne/Cocktail Bar)

Tickets can be purchased online at http://crooner.bpt.me/ or locally at Annex 39 Antiques, next door to the Eureka Theater.

M*A*S*H

May 27, 2016

Doors 7:00 PM | Showtime 7:30 PM

The Eureka Theater is proud to present a rare screening of Robert Altman's smash hit black comedy from 1970. Set in an army medical unit during the Korean War (an allegorical stand-in for Vietnam), Altman's darkly satirical film flew under the radar of Fox executives during production, but went on to be nominated for five Academy Awards. Like the novel it's based upon, the screenplay is largely a collection of episodes and comic scenes. With no defining story arc, Altman turns the atmosphere and the chaos into the film's through-line. M*A*S*H bounces between bloody gallows humor in the operating theater and the brutal practical jokes played by the doctors between shifts, finally culminating in a no-holds-barred football match between two rival Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals. Tickets are $5.00.

What better way to inaugurate the 26th Annual Redwood Coast Music Festival than with one of the greatest blues events of all time. No ordinary concert movie, LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE is the record of an amazing evening at Radio City Music Hall in February 2003, when a host of artists paid tribute to the “Year of the Blues.” Produced by Martin Scorsese as the culmination of his Blues Film Project, the film is punctuated by contemporary interviews and vintage films clips of past blues greats while the performance highlights go on and on. From Angelique Kidjo's African opener "Zélié," to Mavis Staples's gut-wrenching "See That My Grave is Kept Clean," Keb' Mo's cover of Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain," India.Arie’s "Strange Fruit," Buddy Guy’s riff on "Voodoo Chile, " and then Ruth Brown, Solomon Burke, Bonnie Raitt, the Neville Brothers, Robert Cray and B. B. King, director Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day") offers a great consolation prize in lieu of being there.

The Eureka Theater is proud to partner with the Redwood Discovery Museum in presenting the latest installment in our monthly Second Saturday Kids' Matinee Series - THE JUNGLE BOOK. Forget about your worries and your strife and join us for this cartoon classic. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli stories and featuring a slew of catchy tunes, The Jungle Book tells the story of a small boy who is raised in the wild and who might just have to run away and join civilization if he doesn't want to become an afternoon snack. Baloo The Bear (voiced by Phil Harris) reckons Mowgli should stay and party; Bagheera The Panther (Sebastian Cabot) knows all too well the dangers the young boy would face should he stay. Top of that danger list is Shere Khan The Tiger (George Sanders), the king of the jungle when it comes to the food chain. The proceeds from the film go to benefit both the Redwood Discovery Museum and the restoration of the Eureka Theater. Tickets are $5.00 all ages. Doors open at 12:30 PM and the show starts at 1:00pm.

Fourth Friday Flix:
MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
Sponsored by Humboldt Serfs
February 26, 2016 | Showtime 7:30 PM

And now! At last! One of the funniest (and most quotable) comedies of all time, Monty Python and the Holy Grail! Perhaps the Pythons’ finest film, this cult classic puts an absurdist spin on the King Arthur legend complete with silly swordplay, horseless horseplay, a killer bunny, and a band of knights who say “Ni.” Written and performed by John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and the late Graham Chapman, “Holy Grail” also features a hilarious turn by Carol “The Seventh Python” Cleveland and several silly songs courtesy of former “Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band” member (and soon-to-be Rutle) Neil Innes. Plus, it’s the only film that dare asks the question “What’s the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?” Coconuts provided (while supplies last), shrubberies optional.

He befriends a 50-foot robot who’s fallen from outer space, and must protect him when the U.S. government comes after him. Imagine if it turned out that Martha Stewart was a complete fraud who couldn't cook or decorate, and lived alone in a Manhattan apartment. That's pretty much the jumping-off point for this charming Christmas classic, in which Barbara Stanwyck plays a Martha Stewart-like columnist whose articles about her fictitious Connecticut farm and her husband and baby are admired by housewives across the country. When her unsuspecting publisher insists that she hosts a Christmas dinner for a returning war hero, she concocts an elaborate charade on her friend John's Connecticut farm, pretending to be the perfect hostess--complete with husband and baby. Don't miss this one, folks--they don't make 'em like this anymore.

October 16, 2015

Think 1950s science fiction is all hokey special effects and bad acting? Sit down, child, and get an education. The original film version of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS boasts artful direction by Don Siegel, solid performances from its cast, a script that is at turns both witty and chilling, and an atmosphere that is as much film noir as science fiction. It is pointless to resist--give in to the inevitability and see this classic as it was meant to be seen: in the dark, surrounded by strangers.

ALIEN

October 9, 2015

Doors 7:00 PM | Showtime 7:30 PM

Don't let the outer space setting fool you--Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece is straight-up haunted-house horror. Small band of humans trapped in a confined space with a monster that relentlessly picks them off one by one. But while the film's structure is familiar, the script introduced elements rarely seen before--a badass female protagonist (Ellen Ripley, as portrayed by the smashing Sigourney Weaver); an extraterrestrial organism that looked absolutely...well, alien; and an outer space that was cold, unforgiving, and deadly. For a generation that grew up with the clean, well-lit adventureland of Star Trek and Star Wars, ALIEN definitely put a gulp in the throat. Come see it on the big screen, and remember: in space, no one can hear you scream. But they can in the theater. Do what you gotta do.

Amy Stewart's Girl Waits With Gun
Talk and Reading
October 3, 2015 | 5:00 PM
Amy Stewart, Humboldt County’s best-selling local author (and co-owner of Eureka Books), has a new book out this fall: Girl Waits With Gun. GWWG, as we’ve been referring to it, is a novel that begins with a crash. A speeding automobile destroyed their horse-drawn carriage in 1914, and what should have been a simple traffic accident led to blackmail, kidnapping threats, and a shoot-out, all of which actually happened. Amy will give a talk and a reading at the Eureka Theater on October 3. The Eureka Theater will have hand-crafted cocktails for sale, with proceeds to benefit the theater's restoration efforts.

Fourth Friday Flix: THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT
September 25, 2015
Doors 7:00 PM | Showtime 7:30 PM

Bernadette (Terence Stamp), Felicia (Guy Pearce) and Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) are three fabulous drag performers tired of the dangers posed by urban life in Sydney. When an offer comes up for a four-week cabaret engagement in rural Alice Springs, the three friends buy an old school bus, which they name “Priscilla.” Packing up their wigs, feathers and sequined what-not’s, they head out for the adventure of their lives with the music of their idols (including Shirley Bassey, Charlene, Gloria Gaynor, and of course, ABBA) pouring from the stereo. Along the way, they confront homophobia, charm narrow-minded yahoos and dazzle everyone with their lavish costumes and over-the-top performances. A flamboyant comedy guaranteed to change the way you think, the way you feel, and most importantly… the way you dress. And possibly how you think about ping-pong balls.

Fourth Friday Flix: STOP MAKING SENSE

August 28, 2015

Doors 7:00 PM | Showtime 7:30 PM

If you Google "greatest concert movies of all time," this Talking Heads performance film consistently ranks in the top three, and is more often than not at the very top of that list. Directed by the great Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Swimming to Cambodia), Talking Heads are backed up by funk greats Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry, and Ednah Holt, bringing an infectious vitality to the performance. From the opening number Psycho Killer--just David Byrne on a bare stage with an acoustic guitar and a cassette player--to the frenetic, joyful Crosseyed and Painless that concludes the show, STOP MAKING SENSE builds in complexity and energy, until remaining in your seat simply becomes impossible. Eureka Main Street presents
A CAT IN PARIS
July 4, 2015
Doors 1:30 PM | Showtime 2:00 PM
The Eureka Theater's proud partnership with the Humcats Cat Art Show 2015 continues with A CAT IN PARIS, the thrilling animated adventure film that was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. In Paris, a cat who lives a secret life as a cat burglar's aide must come to the rescue of Zoe, the little girl he lives with, after she falls into a gangster's clutches. The New York Times described it as "a gorgeous hand-drawn feature that is one of the highlights of [the New York International Children's Film] festival. A caper featuring a cat, a cat burglar and a girl whose mother is a revenge-obsessed cop, it’s like an animated children’s version of an Alfred Hitchcock or Roman Polanski thriller set on the rooftops of Paris." Recommended for ages 6 and up. Best of all, thanks to the sponsorship of Eureka Main Street, this screening is FREE.

CL Leathers presents
Fourth Friday Flix: THIS IS SPINAL TAP
June 26, 2015
Doors 7:00 PM | Showtime 7:30 PM
Before BEST IN SHOW, before A MIGHTY WIND and WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, there was the greatest "mockumentary" of them all--the gold standard against which all others are measured, and are found wanting. For sheer quotability, it rivals MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, OFFICE SPACE, GHOSTBUSTERS, CASABLANCA and HAMLET. Professional musicians simultaneously love it, and fear it--Aerosmith's Steven Tyler once said "It hits too close too home." Follow documentarian Marty Di Bergi (Rob Reiner) as he chronicles the long-awaited(?) American tour of middle-aged British rockers Spın̈al Tap, headed by David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), who perform such powerful rock anthems as "Sex Farm" and "Big Bottom," among many others. Still not convinced? Check out the rating on IMDB--8.0...out of 11.

Forget even, if you can, the Pontipee brothers startlingly unnatural red hair. Because darn it, this musical works--and if you're not a-grinnin' during the barnraising sequence, then something's deeply wrong. The World’s Greatest Tribute to The World’s Greatest Rock N Roll Band! For over a decade, Rudy Colombini & The Unauthorized Rolling Stones has been recognized as the premier Rolling Stones tribute band in the world. The result was a quantum leap that has left other Stones tributes in the dust. Insiders and die hard fans alike call Rudy & The Unauthorized, "better than the real thing." David Patrick, Spectator Magazine photographer for The Rolling Stone's First Twenty Years said it best: "They sounded more like the Rolling Stones than the Rolling Stones do. In fact, The Unauthorized Rolling Stones sang many of Stones' songs better than the Stones!" Experience the phenomenon that is Rudy Colombini & The Unauthorized Rolling Stones. Tickets are $20 in advance (available at Eureka Theater Box Office (Annex ’39 Antiques), Wildberries Marketplace, and The Works), $25 at the door. Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe presents

ON ANY SUNDAY: THE NEXT CHAPTER

April 18, 2015 | 7:30 PM | doors 7:00 PM

On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter is an exploration into the pursuit of excitement, passion and life in the two-wheeled world of motorcycle riding. Experiences that are as relatable to a rider as a day with friends, others that explore human triumph and overcoming fear, and some which occur once in a lifetime. One moment of riding a motorcycle – On Any Sunday. Critically acclaimed director Dana Brown (“Step Into Liquid” and “Dust to Glory”) teams up with his father, Academy Award Nominee Bruce Brown (“The Endless Summer” and “On Any Sunday”) to journey deeper into the humanity, thrills and excitement of the global culture of motorcycle riding; those who are bonded by their passion for the race, the love of family and friendship, and on a deeper level – their quest for the thrill of the next ride. In 1971, “On Any Sunday” starring Steve McQueen opened in theatres and wrote its place in motorcycle history. It also transcended the sport to reach a wide audience through a cast of engaging characters and variety of heartfelt stories. “On Any Sunday, The Next Chapter” will continue this family tradition and also pass the torch to the next generation. A lot has happened in the past 40 years, but the passion for riding is timeless and continues today. Tickets are $10, and are available online at Tugg.com.

Not to be confused with the much worse 1999 movie of the same name. This screening will be presented in the original process (some cynics might call it a "gimmick") known as ... Emergo! Classic B-movie thrills, the inimitable presence of T. Great Razooly himself, and a few unspeakable surprises await you on April 10th...if you dare!

Redwood Coast Music Festivals presents

Fourth (well, actually Third) Friday Flix:

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (2007)
March 20, 2015
Doors 7:00 PM | Movie showtime 7:30 PM

Consider this the warm-up before next week's Redwood Coast Music Festival--the deliriously joyous, heartbreakingly sad audiovisual feast that is Julie Taymor's ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, featuring wall-to-wall Beatles songs. The late Roger Ebert called it "a bold, beautiful, visually enchanting musical where we walk into the theater humming the songs . . . an audacious marriage of cutting-edge visual techniques, heart-warming performances, 1960s history and the Beatles songbook. Sounds like a concept that might be behind its time, but I believe in yesterday." There are lots of reasons to see it, but we'd be lying if co-star Dana Fuchs (as the very sexy Sadie) wasn't near the top of that list. And, as our good luck would have it, Ms. Fuchs will be performing LIVE during Friday Night Blues Night at the Eureka Theater on March 27th! Your $5 admission ticket to ACROSS THE UNIVERSE will give you a chance to win a VIP package with free tickets and a meeting with Dana the night of her live performance. All you need is luck.

SPOCK.jpg

Spock Day
March 15, 2015 | 3:00 PM - 9:30 PM

"On that day, I shall mourn."

We'll just come right out and say we're not quite ready to let Spock go. And we're guessing we're not the only ones. Yield to the logic of the situation and come to the Eureka Theater on March 15 to celebrate Vulcan's favorite son, brought to cinematic life by the late, great Leonard Nimoy. This is a fairly impromptu event, so keep watching this space for details as they develop. But clear your late afternoon and evening--we can promise that you will see James T. Kirk cry during "Amazing Grace," and see Nimoy pass the torch to Quinto. More than that we cannot say, other than that you will not be sorry if you come early and stay late. [UPDATE: Doors open at 2:30. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN screens at 5:00 PM, and STAR TREK (2009) at 7:00. Let's just say fans of the original TV show should be seated by 3:00. Just sayin'.]  Admission is five U.S. dollars, though we will accept a Canadian $5 note, if you take the time to Spock it. And fans, be not afraid to break out the Starfleet uniforms, the tricorders, the ears--we're all friends here.

Happy Birthday Eureka Theater!

76th Anniversary 1939 movie marathon
March 7, 2015 | 1:00-9:30 PM

We turn 76 years old this March, and we're marking the occasion with a 1939 classic movie marathon! Join us for nearly 9 hours of classic films from 1939, arguably the greatest year in movie history. The fun begins at 1:00 PM (doors open at 12:30)--follow Dorothy and friends down the yellow brick road and see THE WIZARD OF OZ as it was meant to be seen--on the big screen.

At 3:00 PM, sigh and be reminded why congress only has a 16% approval rating--they're not all Jimmy Stewart in MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON. Director Frank Capra just might have been onto something when he produced a movie condemned by the Washington press, the U.S. Congress, Mussolini, Stalin, Franco, and Hitler--and garnered 11 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, but ultimately losing (as nearly everyone did that year) to...

...the one, the only GONE WITH THE WIND at 5:30 PM. Yes, it definitely has its cringe-inducing moments--folks just weren't as enlightened 76 years ago. But there's no resisting its gorgeous Technicolor photography, swelling Max Steiner score and the passionate, turbulent love story between Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). Admission is at original 1939 prices: Thirty-five cents for adults, ten cents for kids 12 and under. No advance tickets. Beer, wine, and cocktails will be sold beginning at 5:00 PM. For more information, contact us at 442-2970 or at info@theeurekatheater.org.

Fourth Friday Flix:
BLAZING SADDLES (1974)

February 27, 2015
Doors 7:00 PM | Movie showtime 7:30 PM

Hedley Lamarr. Horse punching. The beans. Oh, lord, the beans. Mel Brooks took issue with the American Film Institute naming SOME LIKE IT HOT as the funniest movie of all time, insisting that, laugh for laugh, there's never been a funnier movie than BLAZING SADDLES. Good people can disagree on this, but you gotta admit it deserves respect. Hilariously funny and blisteringly politically incorrect, there's enough highbrow and lowbrow humor to offend just about everyone. Admission is $5, tickets sold at the door. We request you not pay with a s***-load of dimes. All proceeds benefit the continuing restoration of the Eureka Theater.

Fourth Friday Flix:

Elvis in VIVA LAS VEGAS (1964)
January 23, 2015
Doors 7:00 PM | Movie showtime 7:30 PM

If Elvis had not passed away in 1977, he would be…well, he’d probably be dead by now. But that’s not stopping us from celebrating his birth month in a manner that befits The King. Join us for—if such things can be measured—the Best. Elvis. Movie. Ever. And it's pretty hard to argue with that sentiment--besides The King himself, the movie features the scene-stealing sizzle of a young Ann-Margret, Las Vegas at its hippest, and a title song that's been covered by everyone from Bruce Springsteen to the Dead Kennedys to Shawn Colvin. Elvis plays a race-car driver named---oh, who cares? Nobody sees this flick for the plot. Elvis. Ann-Margret. Singing and dancing. Vegas, baby, Vegas.  And brezen, baby, brezen--giving Ann-Margret a run for her money will be Alex the Brezen Babe selling fresh, hot Royal Bavarian pretzels in the lobby. Admission is $5 for all ages, tickets sold at the door.

Toss together Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary (Aunt of George) Clooney, and Vera-Ellen; add in songs by Irving Berlin, costumes by Edith Head, and some great supporting actors like Mary Wickes and Dean Jagger; and present it all in Technicolor VistaVision, and you've got a Christmas classic for the ages. Admission is $5 for all ages, tickets sold at the door. Fourth Friday Flix: Black Friday Dino Double Feature!

THE LAND BEFORE TIME and JURASSIC PARK

November 28, 2014

Doors 1:30 PM | Land: 2:00 PM | Jurassic: 3:30 PM

When we were kids, everyone knew dinosaurs were giant lizards. Now, it turns out, they were more likely the ancestors of modern birds. So the day after most Americans celebrate their gratitude for all things good by consuming mass portions of Meleagris gallopavo (the modern domestic turkey), we thought it appropriate to honor their larger, significantly more badass progenitors. After the inevitable leftover turkey sandwich lunch, bring the kids to the Eureka Theater for a big-screen showing of the original 1988 animated classic THE LAND BEFORE TIME. Join Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, Petrie and Spike in their first adventure, as they journey together to find the Great Valley. Dino Day continues for the adults and older kids with the ultimate dinosaur blockbuster JURASSIC PARK (1993), in which Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum attempt to avoid becoming Dinosaur Chow when cloned theme-park dinosaurs run amok. Admission for the double feature is a budget-friendly $5.00 for all ages!

PENTON: THE JOHN PENTON STORY

November 22, 2014

Who the hell is John Penton? You're about to find out. The Far West Motorcycle Club and sponsors Leon's Car Care CenterQuality Body Works, and Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe are proud to present a new feature-length documentary about a man who transformed an industry and created a motorcycle racing dynasty. John Penton was one of the most influential figures in the development of off-road motorcycle racing in America during the 1960s and ‘70s. A national champion rider, Penton went on to develop a legendary brand of off-road motorcycles that bore his name. He also founded Hi-Point, a boot and apparel company that for a time boasted over half the sales in the U.S. market. The movie, narrated by Grammy winner Lyle Lovett (who worked in the parts department at a Penton dealership in Texas when he was 14), uses interviews, old photos, and recreated scenes to paint a detailed portrait of the motorcycle pioneer. See the trailer here. Fee for admission: pass-the-helmet donation at the theater. Proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Redwoods. For more information, email dave@qualitybodyworks.com.

SEE the ultra-low budget horror film made by a group of young movie enthusiasts, including Dennis Muren (Star Wars, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park), who would go on to win 9 visual effects Oscars in his career (so far). Part fever dream, part grindhouse schlock, part Evil Dead ancestor, and part love letter to Ray Harryhausen, EQUINOX is a strangely charming labor of love. A labor of love featuring demonic park rangers, creepy old guys in caves, and stop-motion monsters spawned from Hell itself. Enjoy.

Bad Cinema Weekend -
Two nights. Four terrible movies.
October 17-18, 2014

Doors 6:30 PM | Showtime 7:00

You think you know what Bad Cinema is. You think it was that summer movie starring [that actor/actress you sometimes like] but ended up being boring/stupid/not worth your time and $10. You are wrong. You will forget that summer movie within weeks, if not days. Bad Cinema is with you the rest of your life. Bad Cinema is compelling, like eye surgery on TV. Bad Cinema stars no one you've ever heard of, and costs less to make than your last kitchen remodel. Yet you cannot turn away, and you will find yourself watching Bad Cinema over and over again. Bad Cinema endures. Like herpes.

The Eureka Theater--along with our generous sponsors CityBarberShopLittle Shop of HersL & M Photography, and Cool 105.5--is deeply ashamed to present the first-ever Bad Cinema Weekend. Two nights. Four terrible movies. Friday's double feature kicks off with Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s magnum opus, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, and continues with the modern masterpiece BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR, written and directed by James Nguyen (Master of Romantic Thrillers™). The delicious wretchedness continues Saturday with the baffling ROBOT MONSTER (in glorious 2-D!), and concludes with the Eureka big-screen debut of Mystery Science Theater 3000--cleanse your Bad Cinema palate with Joel & the 'bots riffing on the sublimely rancid 1960s caveman musical romance Eegah! Suffice it to say you'll be thankful for our full bar.

Single admission $5.00 each night

Join us for this free screening of newly digitized historic films depicting North Coast life from daily small town doings from the 1930s to the 1950s to major events, including the dedication of Redwood National Park, a film of the 1964 flood damage with narration, and live footage of the 1992 Cape Mendocino earthquake. Take a step back in time at the Eureka Theater to celebrate Humboldt History on the big screen, while enjoying your favorite concessions, including popcorn, soda, candy, jerky, coffee, and local beer.

Gale King - State Farm Insurance presents
Fourth Friday Flix: DOUBLE INDEMNITY
September 26, 2014

Doors 7:00 PM | Movie 7:30 PM

Opening scene of this nearly perfect film noir: "Office memorandum. Walter Neff to Barton Keyes, Claims Manager, Los Angeles, July 16, 1938. Dear Keyes: I suppose you'll call this a confession when you hear it. Well, I don't like the word 'confession.' I just want to set you right about something you couldn't see because it was smack up against your nose. You think you're such a hot potato as a Claims Manager; such a wolf on a phony claim. Maybe you are. But let's take a look at that Dietrichson claim, Accident and Double Indemnity. You were pretty good in there for a while, Keyes. You said it wasn't an accident. Check. You said it wasn't suicide. Check. You said it was murder. Check. You thought you had it cold, didn't you? All wrapped up in tissue paper with pink ribbons around it. It was perfect - except it wasn't, because you made one mistake. Just one little mistake. When it came to picking the killer, you picked the wrong guy. You want to know who killed Dietrichson? Hold tight to that cheap cigar of yours, Keyes. I killed Dietrichson - me, Walter Neff, insurance salesman, 35 years old, unmarried, no visible scars... (He glances down at his bullet wound.) - until a while ago, that is. Yes, I killed him. I killed him for money and for a woman. I didn't get the money and I didn't get the woman. Pretty, isn't it?"

If that doesn't hook you, how about this: Directed by Billy Wilder. Screenplay by Raymond Chandler. You'll never watch My Three Sons or The Big Valley the same way again.

WOODSTOCK: 3 Days of Peace and Music

August 22, 2014

Doors 6:30 PM | Movie 7:00 PM

They say if you remember the Sixties, you weren't really there. Well, now you don't have to! Celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, held at Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York on a sometimes rain-soaked weekend from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Half a million people of all colors, shapes, sizes, ages and sexes came by car, by truck, a few even by helicopter, but the majority walked to what turned out to be the most famous festival in history, an event that was hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”  Thirty-two legendary musical acts appeared which included Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez, Santana, The Who, Janis Joplin, and many more. Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature.  1970 | 225 min.

Parker Posey, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Bob Balaban, Jane Lynch and John Michael Higgins all wear their crazy on their sleeves in this painfully smart and funny ensemble film written and directed by the master of the genre, Christopher Guest (This Is Spinal Tap).

 DR. NO

July 25, 2014 | 7:30 PM

Wow. The IMDB description reads: "A resourceful government agent seeks answers in a case involving a missing colleague and the disruption of the American space program." Um, yeah...oh, and did we mention it's frickin' James Bond? "A resourceful government agent"--sheesh. Plus Ursula Andress in that bikini, and that knife. Plus an actual Nehru-jacket-wearing Bond villain and a cool underwater lair. This is the one that started it all, folks--the first time we heard "Bond. James Bond"--uttered by a young lad in a tuxedo named Sean Connery. Bonus points for you if you dress for the occasion (Tuxedo? Nehru jacket? Hawaiian shirt & Bermuda shorts? Bikini?), and come a bit early for classic Bond martinis (shaken, not stirred) and yummy tropical cocktails.

Redwood Family Practice presents:
The Beatles in A HARD DAY'S NIGHT

Saturday, July 5, 2014 | 8:00 PM

The British are coming to the Eureka Theater with the Fab Four's first foray into film--Richard Lester's delightful, exhilarating rock & roll movie classic, digitally restored for its 50th anniversary. Join John, Paul, George, Ringo, and Paul's grandfather ("a clean old man") through a "typical" 36 hours in the life of your average Liverpudlian rock star. Of course, you're welcome to come as you are this gear screening. But you'll be way more fab in that flip or moptop, go-go boots or Beatle boots, knee-length dress or slim dark suit. Dig through the closet, head to the thrift store or vintage clothing shop, and come party like it's 1964! And you know what to say when someone asks you if you're a Mod or a Rocker...

Women thumb.jpg

Fourth Friday Flix:
THE WOMEN

June 27, 2014 | 8:00 PM

Another classic film from Hollywood's Golden Year (and the birth year of the Eureka Theater), 1939. Movie critic Josh Bell sums it up best: "Both horribly sexist and a landmark of cinematic feminism, George Cukor’s The Women is as deeply troubling as it is phenomenally entertaining. Based on the play by Clare Booth Luce, and with a screenplay by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin, The Women celebrates sisterhood and female solidarity, while wallowing in cattiness and competition for male attention." Okay, so some of the attitudes are wildly outdated, but the sparkling, witty dialogue more than makes up for it. And with a cast featuring Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Norma Shearer, Paulette Goddard and Joan Fontaine (among many others, all women), what's not to like? Apply some Jungle Red nail polish, and get yer claws down here!

The Humboldt Del Norte Foundation for Medical Care presents
ESCAPE FIRE: THE FIGHT TO RESCUE AMERICAN HEALTHCARE

May 29, 2014 | 6:00-8:30 PM

Don't miss this documentary film that tackles one of the most pressing issues of our time: how can we save our healthcare system? From the Escape Fire website: "ESCAPE FIRE examines the powerful forces maintaining the status quo, a medical industry designed for quick fixes rather than prevention, for profit-driven care rather than patient-driven care. After decades of resistance, a movement to bring innovative high-touch, low-cost methods of prevention and healing into our high-tech, costly system is finally gaining ground. Award-winning filmmakers Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke follow dramatic human stories as well as leaders fighting to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government, and even the US military. ESCAPE FIRE is about finding a way out. It's about saving the health of a nation." The film will be followed by a facilitated panel discussion and audience Q&A session led by MacArthur Fellow Dr. Jeffrey Brenner from the Camden Coalition. Fourth Friday Flix: OFFICE SPACE
April 25, 2014 | 7:30 PM

Sure, we could write a lot here about Office Space--give a brief plot synopsis, mention the cast, try to communicate Why. It. Rocks. But what would be the point? You know all this. You have seen it, probably many times. Many of us are living it. The words "flair," "Swingline," "Michael Bolton," and "Penetrode" bring appreciative, savoring smiles to your faces. And the few out there that have somehow managed to miss it undoubtedly have friends that will spontaneously quote from it at great length, and can do a much better job of getting your sorry behind into the theater to share it with them. So stick it to The Man by coming to see Office Space on the big screen. Flair optional. And we do not want to see your O face.

MARCH 1: Join us for a classic movie marathon--12 hours of classic films from 1939, possibly the greatest year in movie history. The fun begins when doors open at 11:00 AM, with face painting for the kids, and special guests from Oz will be on hand for photo ops, courtesy of Humboldt Light Opera CompanyAt noon, follow Dorothy and friends down the yellow brick road and see The Wizard of Oz as it was meant to be seen--on the big screen.

At 2:00 PM, it's the movie that turned Westerns from cheesy singing cowboy flix into a unique American art form, and made John Wayne a star--Stagecoach.

At 6:15 PM, it's cocktail time with Nick and Nora Charles in Another Thin Man.

The 6th Annual StrangeBrew Beerfest

November 9, 2013 | 5:30 PM

The most anticipated fundraising event for the Eureka Theater is back! Again, we challenge local brewers to create the strangest and most delicious concoctions for the folks of Humboldt County and beyond. This is an event to showcase their talents, and to prove that Northern California is the best when it comes to beer. Previous showings have included everything from whiskey barrel aged beer, to vegetable/fruit/herb/plant ales, to multi-yeast and bacteria fermented libations. Super Diamond - The Alternative Neil Diamond Experience

October 26, 2013 | 7:30 PM

When your parents popped in a Neil Diamond tape on repeat during long interstate road trips, you reluctantly sang along. Never thought you'd turn out to be a Diamond fan now, right?  A band out of San Francisco can put a rest to that Diamond thirst. Super Diamond delivers a high-octane Diamond tribute show that rocks! SF Weekly said it best: "enough irony to draw the cool kids, enough rock to move the Sigma Chis, enough class to accommodate the corporate VPs between the ice sculptures, and more than enough Neil to swoon the housewives." This will be a seriously fun show, for hipsters and Boomers alike. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Tickets are $25, and are available at Suddenlink, The Works, Wildberries Market, Annex '39 Antiques, Coast Central Credit Union in Fortuna, Ferndale Music, and Judy's F Street Barbershop in Eureka.
